About NW4SD
Welcome to North Whitehall for Sustainable Development. North Whitehall for Sustainable Development (NW4SD) began in September of 2007. The original meeting attracted over 60 residents to a park in the township to discuss a letter they had received from Wal-Mart Corporation. The letter had invited local citizens to attend a meeting being hosted by Wal-Mart to discuss future plans they had for our township. That letter sparked questions and concerns from many residents of North Whitehall Township. Most importantly, how did a development of this magnitude become a possibility without the knowledge of so many of the residents?
This was the driving force in the coordination of NW4SD, a local volunteer group that wanted to encourage the township supervisors to say no to this possible development. North Whitehall Township is a rural community with limited infrastructure. Our biggest concern was that our small, already crowded roads could not handle the extra traffic that would be generated by a big box store like a Wal-Mart Supercenter. While organizing our efforts, it became apparent that the township supervisors were not going to put up any resistance to the corporation that planned to change the small town feel of our township.
After several meetings, we realized it was time to promote smart, sustainable growth in order to retain the integrity, character and quality of life of North Whitehall Township.
